Notes | The incised decoration on this early pot reflect earlier traditions of carved wooden vessels. When these people began making pottery they tried to copy the designs from wooden vessels into the new medium.Yanik Tepe lies in north-western Iran on the north east edge of Lake Urmia. The people who made this pot lived in small, tent-like, circular houses. These and their tradition of wood carving reflect a nomadic origin. They came to Lake Urmia from the north, possibly from beyond the Caucasus mountains. | | Presented by Professor Charles A Burney, 1967. |
