Basic Information

Accession Number:1968A1227
Collection:Antiquities – Prehistory
Date:8000 BC – 5000 BC

Notes

This stone axe has been beautifully worked and is highly polished all over.
It was probably never intended to be used as a working tool. It is made out of jadeite which was regarded as a luxury product in prehistoric times and traded throughout Europe. The use of this material together with its fine craftsmanship both suggest that this was a ceremonial item or status symbol reserved for a local dignitary.

Purchased from the Blackmore Museum, Salisbury, Wiltshire.
