Notes

The central panel of this De Morgan dish shows the ‘Pelican in her Piety’. The pelican is associated with self-sacrifice and the sacrifice made by Jesus. This is due to the female pelican’s habit of plucking the feathers from her breast until it bleeds to line her nest. The centre is framed with further pelican motifs and sunbursts.
