Basic Information

Accession Number:1969W1945
Collection:Antiquities – Ancient Egypt

Notes

Sculptors often prepared trial pieces in soft stone as a practice before they began work on the final statue. This one depicts the head of a Ptolemaic king. It was made at a time when there was increasingly Greek influence on Egyptian art; it possibly represents a deliberate attempt to preserve native Egyptian artistic traditions.

On permanent loan from the Wellcome Institute.
