Notes

Robert Marsden makes powerful statements through his scuptural pieces, often created in series, and made of brass, copper, gilding metal or bronze whilst outdoor constructions are made of steel. They often suggest energy and movement, while at other times create a sense of stability, symmetry and regularity. In the series ‘Lines’ the construction is of triangular section sheet metal, aligned and soldered into complex curves. The surfaces were often patinated to achieve a permanent finish and matt surface texture, introducing a subtle element of colour. Since these forms were structurally stable and strong, their scale could be increased easily resulting in large outdoor sculpture for gardens, built in sections. Subsequently this development was encouraged by commissions for pieces sited in private gardens in London and the USA.Later development of a smaller simpler series of ‘Lines’ were given witty and incongruous titles such as: ‘A Line Without Measure’, as in this example from the collections.
