Notes | This is the only gold medal by the Dutch engraver Heinrich Goltzius that is known to survive. It depicts Robert Dudley, Earl of Leicester, Queen Elizabeth I's great favourite. It was engraved in 1586, when the queen had sent Leicester to command an English army that was helping the Low Countries in their revolt against Spanish rule.
