Notes | This is a rare example of an early oil painting by Cox, who subsequently abandoned the medium in favour of watercolour for some forty years before returning to oils again in 1839. By then he was established as one of the leading watercolourists of his day. For the remainder of his career he worked confidently in both media, sometimes producing variations on the same theme in both oil and watercolour. | Presented by Frederick Nettlefold in accordance with the wishes of his brother, the late Joseph Henry Nettlefold, 1882 |
