One of five study drawings in Birmingham's collection for the 1884 oil painting 'King Cophetua and the Beggar Maid' now in the collections of Tate. Birmingham's collection also holds the fully worked up colour cartoon for this subject.

This drawing depicts one of the two singing boys behind the throne on which the Beggar Maid sits.

Purchased and presented by subscribers, 1903.
