This sketch may illustrate Mary and her hand maidens in Rossetti's poem 'The Blessed Damozel'. The figure on the far right is for Millais' oil painting Mariana (1850-51, Tate). The figure on the far left of a woman folding a piece of cloth can be seen in several other sketches in Birmingham's collection. The work was previously thought to be a study for The Eve of the Deluge.
