Notes | The incised decoration on this bowl is typical of the Quimbaya culture of central Colombia.Several distinct regional cultural styles can be isolated in Colombia of which the best known is the Quimbaya. Its pottery is either decorated with deeply incised geometric designs, as here, or with resist-painted patterns. The Colombians were also noted for their goldworking traditions which went back at least a thousand years before the Spanish conquest in 1530. | | Purchased from Berkeley Galleries, 1958. |
