Notes | This stone sculpture originates from Gandhara, Afghanistan, between 100-300 AD.It is the head of a larger statue of Buddha. The ‘top knot’ on his head is a symbol of great wisdom. This sculpture is made in the ‘Gandharan’ style, which is named after the ancient region of Northern India where it was first developed (now in modern Afghanistan). The speciality of this art style was its unique, naturalistic way of representing Buddha, which had been influenced by settlements of Greek people and culture in that area. | | Purchased from Reading Museum. |
