Notes | In Egypt the scarab beetle was a symbol of creation and for the dead it symbolised their new life in the afterworld. This delicate example, made in three pieces, might have been worn threaded together as a piece of jewellery. Alternatively it may have been sewn onto a dress. Like much Egyptian ornament it probably also acted as a magic amulet whether made for the dead or the living. | | Presented by Air Commodore E St Clair Harnet, 1968. |
