Notes | The central panel of this De Morgan dish shows the ‘Pelican in her Piety’. The pelican is associated with self-sacrifice and the sacrifice made by Jesus. This is due to the female pelican’s habit of plucking the feathers from her breast until it bleeds to line her nest.
