Notes | This watercolour drawing by a member of the well-known Lines family probably depicts Rose Hill in Handsworth.Eight different members of the Lines family have been recorded as having artistic ability. Several of them produced landscape drawings and studies of trees with great skill and sensitivity.Samuel Lines Senior established an art school in Newhall Street, eventually becoming a leading founder of the Birmingham School of Art in 1821, and held the position of treasurer and curator of the Birmingham Society of Artists until his eightieth year. His sons Henry Harris Lines, Frederick Thomas Lines and Samuel Rostill Lines were also prolific artists and continued the family tradition of documenting the landscape of the Birmingham area. | | Transferred from Birmingham Reference Library. |
