Notes | This Saxon axehead originates from the Thames at Maidenhead, dating circa 800-900.It is an example of what is called a T-shaped axe. This is the commonest type of axe shown in pictures of workmen from the Saxon period and the Middle Ages.The T-shaped axe was a multi-purpose woodworking tool, not a battle-axe used for fighting. It was used by carpenters, builders, barrel-makers and other craftsmen to trim and shape timber. | |
