Brooch

Mrs Hull Grundy was cutting in the extreme about mass-produced jewellery, but she had a fondness for this brooch and others like it. Knowing that they were made in Birmingham, she made several purchases of this type of work for presentation to the collection. She was delighted when the daughter of the maker made herself known to the Museum after seeing the jewellery on display. Frederick Massingham made a series of ballerina brooches at his premises in Northampton Street, which he shared with his brother James Massingham who was also a silversmith. The firm D H Phillips of London registered these ballerina designs and Frederick Massingham was the only silversmith to make them up into jewellery.
