Notes | This bowl was made using the traditional Japanese metalworking technique of ‘mokumé gane’. Practiced for over 300 years, its meaning in English is ‘metal woodgrain’, which refers to the patterns normally produced in Japan. The process involves the sandwiching of different metals together by diffusion, or silver soldering, and then the removal of one or more layers to produce the grained effect. | | Presented by the Contemporary Art Society, 1986. |
