Notes

Stanley Morris was a talented metalwork student of the Vittoria Street School for Jewellers & Silversmiths and the Margaret Street School of Art, Birmingham, during the 1930’s. He won prizes and awards, and used the money from one of the scholarships awarded to him by The Worshipful Company of Goldsmiths to buy the silver for this piece. It was inspired by the competition for the Design of Guildford Cathedral Plate.and, as a work of the 1930’s, reflects aspects of Art Deco design.Morris produced ecclesiastic, domestic and civic plate from his premises in King Alfred’s Place, Birmingham and was taught by, and collaborated with, the silversmith Bernard Cuzner. In his later career he went on to produce much church plate for the region, which is still in use today.

Presented by the Friends of Birmingham Museum & Art Gallery with assistance from MGC/V & A Museum Purchase Grant Fund, 1991.
