Notes | This painting is a representative example of the originality and careful realism which characterised the art of Henry Dawson. He had a deep admiration for the scenery of the English landscape. In 'St. Paul's from the River Thames', the ugly architecture of the gloomy houses form a sharp contrast to the beauty and light of the sky and the river, and the effect of the great cathedral towering over the scene is very impressive. | | Presented by the Trustees of the Public Picture Gallery Fund, 1890. |
