Notes

This painting is a representative example of the originality and careful realism which characterised the art of Henry Dawson. He had a deep admiration for the scenery of the English landscape. In 'St. Paul's from the River Thames', the ugly architecture of the gloomy houses form a sharp contrast to the beauty and light of the sky and the river, and the effect of the great cathedral towering over the scene is very impressive.

Presented by the Trustees of the Public Picture Gallery Fund, 1890.
