Notes

A sketch for the first painting in the series of seven canvases illustrating 'The Story of St George' for the dining room of the artist Myles Birket Foster, at Witley, Surrey.

This may be a study for the figure of Princess Sabra; for the 1866 oil painting 'The Princess in the Garden' currently in the collection of the Musee d'Orsay, Paris. The figure in this study differs from the finished design (see study of 1865-66, pencil, British Museum) in that she faces left instead of right. The sleeve drapery is also different.

Purchased and presented by subscribers, 1903.
