Notes | This is an anatomical study for the uplifted left arm of the figure of Justice in Ford Madox Brown's cartoon 'The Spirit of Justice.' He designed the cartoon in Paris and submitted it to the 1845 competition to decorate the Houses of Parliament. In the design a widow has brought the baron who murdered her husband before the figure of Justice. Justice is blind and strains to listen cupping her ear to hear the case. Justice's left ear can be seen between the thumb and forefinger in this study.
