Notes

This is a preparatory design for the wood-engraving by the Dalziel Brothers published on 16 July, 1859, in the periodical 'Once a Week' (p. 41). The poem is by Alfred Lord Tennyson, and is about the grandmother musing to her granddaughter about her son's death and also her impending own death. Themes that contrast between youth and age and deal with the appraoch of death are central in Victorian literature and illustration.
