Notes | Brown entered a competition in 1844, to design a large altarpiece depicting the Ascension of Christ, for the Church of St. James, Bermondsey (south London). He was unsuccessful and the commission went to the now obscure painter John Wood (1801-1877). This is a study for one of several groups of angels who welcome Christ to heaven.
