Maker Information

After a design by:Frederick Sandys - View biography for Frederick Sandys

Notes

This is a photographic image of the finished design on two woodblocks ready to be engraved. This identification is confirmed by the absence of the engraver's signature and the fact that the composition and Sandys's monogram are in reverse. Two opposing wood grains can be seen indicating that the design has been drawn onto two blocks which were screwed together. The photograph is highly likely to have been made to allow Sandys to keep a record of his drawing which would have been destroyed in the engraving process. The Hartley Collection, Museum of Fine Arts Boston, holds additional photographs of the design on the uncut woodblock.

Purchased and presented by subscribers, 1906.
