Notes | This is a photograph of the finished design on the woodblock ready to be engraved. This identification is confirmed by the absence of the engraver's signature and the fact that the composition and Sandys's monogram are in reverse. The photograph is highly likely to have been made to allow Sandys to keep a record of his drawing which would have been destroyed in the engraving process. Another photograph of the uncut woodblock (private collection) has the name of the photographer stamped on the reverse: 'W. Jeffrey, 114 Gt. Russell Street' (Betty Elzea,' Frederick Sandys 1829-1904: A Catalogue Raisonné,' p. 214).
