It is thought the drawing is possibly of the artist's sisters, Margaretta on the left who would have been about 18 years and Maria (b.1841) on the right aged about 13 and looking older than her actual age. The initials F.G.S. refer to Frederick George Stephens (1827-1907) an art historian and member of the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood.
