Notes

In August 1786, Francis Towne travelled with James White and John Merivale to the Lake District. Ambleside, overlooking Lake Windermere, served as their base for most of their stay. Towne subsequently depicted Ambleside from every angle, beginning to sketch 'on the spot' and working up the drawings in pen and watercolour considerably later.

Presented by the John Feeney Bequest Fund, 1921.
