Notes

From a bound volume containing 86 studies for illustrations to 'The Story of Cupid and Psyche' made to accompany the poem in William Morris' 'The Earthly Paradise'.

The composition is closer to the two wood engravings except that the mourners bearing branches are replaced by musicians. The design was worked up into two oil paintings, 'The Challenge in the Wilderness' (1894-98, Collection of Lord Lloyd-Webber) and 'The Wedding of Psyche' (1895, Musee Royaux des Beaux-Arts de Belgique, Brussels).

Bequeathed by James Richardson Holliday, 1927.
