Notes | A lady would have used this whip to encourage the horses pulling her carriage. It is made of lancewood and has a mother-of-pearl handle mounted with silver. The whip was made by John Boulton & Co., a wholesale whip manufacturers located at Newton Street in Birmingham. It was designed so that the owner could drive her own carriage and therefore it is very long and light. Lancewood whips were made in various decorative styles to emulate bamboo, rattan and holly. Sometimes they were enamelled in white or other colours. | |
