Whistler drew upon the Japanese print tradition for this complex asymmetrical composition of the Angel Inn at Rotherhithe. In an interesting reversal of the traditional practice, the scene became the source for the oil painting 'Wapping', now at the National Gallery of Art, Washington, whose background he described as 'like an etching'.
