Notes

This drawing shows Moore exploring ideas for a sculpture entitled The Rocking Chair, a work he made in three different versions for his two year old daughter. The gentle motion of the rocking chair, implicit in the sequence of seven studies, suggests the comfort and constancy of the mother's relationship with her child.

Presented by the Friends of Birmingham Museums and Art Gallery, 1948.
