Russell was not well-known as a painter of landscapes, yet as this sketchbook demonstrates, he was evidently interested in the subject and was here using his sketchbooks to record the views he saw on his travels. The sketchbook contains numerous scenes drawn in Chichester, Portsmouth, Guildford and London, as well as tree studies.
