The identity of the both the sitter in this portrait and its artist have long been contested, however it is now believed that the artist was Palma il Giovane. It is thought it may be a portrait of the artist Antonio Vassilacchi (1556-1629).
Purchased with the assistance of the National Art Collections Fund, 1961.
