Basic Information

Accession Number:1965T1293
Collection:Social History - Pinto Collection
Date:1870 - 1870

Notes

Stagecoaches and trains did not have toilet facilities in the nineteenth century and making a long journey could prove extremely uncomfortable. Travellers were advised to make their own provision, often by taking along their personal chamber pot. Fortunately this splendid example does not appear to have been used. It is a ceremonial piece presented by Mr. George A. Morse in 1871. Sadly we do not know the reason behind such an unusual gift!

Purchased from Edward H Pinto, 1965.
