Collection:Social History - Pinto Collection
Date:1780 - 1785

Notes

This laminated wooden shoe buckle is one of a pair made in England around 1780-1785. They are very similar in style to those made of cut steel. However, wood is an unusual material for making buckles, and it is possible that this is a unique piece. They are very skilfully made. In the space of just 10 millimetres the maker has managed to insert 9 different bands of wood. He has used boxwood, mahogany, ebony, satinwood and kingwood to achieve this beautiful, decorative piece.

Purchased from Edward H Pinto, 1965.
