This bomb was dropped on Birmingham during World War II. Between 8th August 1940 and 23rd April 1943 Birmingham experienced a total of seventy-seven enemy raids. Over 2,000 people were killed and 3,000 seriously injured.The bombing, known as the Blitz, caused countless individual tragedies, the death or injury of relatives and friends, the destruction of homes and the horror and fear caused by an aerial attack. During the bombings people tried to protect themselves in air raid shelters. Many of the attacks were aimed at factories producing munitions like the Castle Bromwich aeroplane factory and the BSA works at Small Heath. |
