'The Reading Lesson' is a watercolour of high technical quality, with notable success in the treatment of light and shade, and in the execution of the silk dress and the domed glass case of stuffed birds. There are comparable depictions of well-furnished middle class interiors of similar date by such painters as Frederick Goodall and James Collinson, although here there is no attempt at purveying a Pre-Raphaelite moral message, nor even a sentimental poignancy. This is an image which wholly reflects the ideals and taste of its period and public, with an affirming, uncritical eye.

Purchased from Biddle and Webb Ltd, 1981.
