Recent research by Victoria Osborne suggests that this is a informal study of the artist Edward Robert Hughes (1851-1914). He and Murray were students together at Heatherley's in the late 1860s and became lifelong friends. Hughes would have been nearly 18 in August 1869, and was noted for his good looks.
