Notes | A celebrated artist in Pakistan before he came to England in 1956, Shemza's reputation has suffered neglect as well as re-assessment in a major exhibition organised by Birmingham Museums and Art Gallery in 1997. On one level his paintings, ink drawings and prints are part of the modern abstract tradition. The deepest source of inspiration however remained the Islamic world. Here the initial letter equivalent to 'M' in the Arabic alphabet has become the basis for a meditative arrangement of line, colour and repetition. | | Presented by the Friends of Birmingham Museums and Art Gallery, 1998. |
