Notes | Innes explores the harmonies of colour, form and texture in works that appear entirely abstract but are rooted in the 'real' world of objects and landscapes which inspire them. Here, a band of dense colour was laid across the canvas and then partly washed away with turpentine leaving a transparent veil of paint. Pristine edges contrast with broken, flowing deltas of colour where the wet paint has seeped beneath the masking tapes. The work can be seen as a series of conscious decisions and controlled accidents in which the physical properties of the paint itself is the basis of the work. | | Purchased by the Contemporary Art Society Special Collection Scheme with funds from the Arts Council Lottery Fund and the Friends of Birmingham Museums and Art Gallery, 1999. |
