Notes | An Empress Dowager bowl decorated 'en grisaille' (in monchrome tones).
Contained within the red seal on this bowl are a phoenix and a dragon. Traditionally, dragons are depicted on the left and phoenixes on the right. Men walk on the left and women on the right in formal Chinese ceremonies. The Dowager Empress had so much power that she placed the female phoenix to the left of the male dragon.
The three red characters on the side of the bowl are 'Da Ya Zai'. 'Da Ya Zai' is most likely the name of the place where this bowl was made.
