Notes | The dragon on this saucer dish represents the emperor. The pattern is symbolic of waves.
Throughout the Chinese dynasties, each emperor has been seen as the incarnation of a dragon, the ruler of the seas. This stems from a Chinese myth about a heroic figure called Yu the Great. Originally said to be a dragon, he controlled an ancient flood by creating canals. He became the first emperor of the Xia dynasty, reigning from 2205 BC to 2197 BC.
