Biography for Gwilym Thomas
EducationGwilym Thomas attended the Swansea School of Art (1931), gaining a place at the Royal College of Art, London (1935), where he began to study ceramics under William Staite Murray (1881-1962). EmploymentPre-war Thomas taught evening classes in ceramics at the Putney School of Art, and in boys' clubs in London's, East End. After the War he continued to make pots and taught at Bromley and Maidstone Schools of Art, then at the Hammersmith School of Art from 1951, becoming Head of Ceramics in 1973, retiring from full-time teaching in 1975. In 1956 he moved to Orpington, Kent where he built his own pottery studio.
