Biography for Jack Smith
EducationHe was educated at Nether Edge Grammar School, Yorkshire and awarded a scholarship to Sheffield College of Art in 1944-46. He resumed studies at St. Martin's School of Art 1948-50, and at the Royal College of Art, London from 1950-52 under John Minton, Ruskin Spear and Carel Weight. AwardsSmith won first prize at the first John Moores Liverpool Exhibition in 1956. TravelsHe visited Madrid and Toledo in 1954, and Venice in 1955. He also began regular visits to Mevagissey and Zennor, Cornwall in 1956. EmploymentHe began painting in Sheffield in 1942 and was a teleprinter operator and flying boat servicer in the Royal Airforce from 1946 to 1948. He began teaching at Bath Academy, Corsham, Wiltshire in 1950. He taught at Chelsea School of Art from 1957.
