Biography for Joseph Barber
TravelsHe was one of the first Birmingham artists to travel to North Wales to sketch. EmploymentBarber moved to Birmingham in the 1770s to work as a painter of papier-mâché and japanned ware. By 1785 he was in demand as a portrait draughtsman and became the first professional drawing-master in Birmingham. His students included David Cox (1783-1859) and William Radclyffe (1780-1855) as well as Barber's two sons.
