EducationEarly education in Leeuwarden; Antwerp Academy in 1852, studied art under Wappers and De Keyser, and later under Baron Leys. MemberAssociate of the Old Water-Colour Society (1873); Member (1875); Associate of the Royal Academy (1876); Member (1879). AwardsChevalier of the Legion of Honour (1873); Knighted (1899); Order of Merit (1905). EmploymentAlma-Tadema lived in Brussels from 1865, travelling to London around 1869. He became a naturalised British subject in 1873. He painted themes from Ancient Greek and Roman history. Exhibited at the Royal Academy from 1869.
