Biography for Stanhope Alexander Forbes
EducationWhen his father moved to London to work Stanhope attended Dulwich College. He later studied at Lambeth School of Art and the Royal Academy Schools before travelling to Paris to study from 1880. MemberHe was a founding member of the New English Art Club in 1886. He was elected RA in 1910. TravelsIn 1881 Forbes travelled to Brittany to paint with his friend Henry La Thangue (1859-1929) before moving to Newlyn in 1884. EmploymentIn 1884 Forbes painted his 'Fish Sale on a Cornish Beach' which was exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1885. Later that year he met Elizabeth whom he was able to marry in 1889 after the sale of his 'The Health of the Bride' to Henry Tate for £600. The same year he and his wife helped to set up the Newlyn School of Painting.
